The project is focused on the development of research regarding the implementation of the National Natura 2000 network – SCIs in Romania, and it answers some priority requirements of the current stage (subsequent joining the EU). The animal species listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC are of particular interest for the approached theme.

General objective
Identification of measures necessary to ensure the long-term maintenance, or, if case be, recovery of a favorable conservation status for the Natura 2000 species in the Annex II of the Habitats Directive (HD), in their natural distribution area.

Specific objectives
Objective 1: Strengthening the adequate scientific frame for Natura 2000 legislation in Romania.
Objective 2: Research regarding the scientific substantiation for the process of implementing the Natura 2000 SCI network in Romania and implicitly its integration in the European network.
Objective 3: Control of anthropic impact within the national Natura 2000 SCI network.
Objective 4: Implementation of EU requests regarding information and awareness rising on the Natura 2000 concept, in the political, economical and civil society.

The project purpose is to wield a scientific excellence structure which will fulfill the role of technical and scientific consultant in regard to the animal species in the Annex II of the HD, in the process of implementation of the Natura 2000 legislation in Romania. To achieve this purpose the following results will be achieved:

  • Strengthening the adequate technical and scientific background for implementing the Natura 2000 SCI network in Romania
  • The scientific documentation regarding taxonomical, ethological, zoogeographical and ecological data needed for long-term maintenance of a favorable conservation status of, or rebuilding the effectives of animal species listed in the Annex II of the HD.
  • Creating a complete and up-to-date database with the needed information, crucial for establishing long-term conservation measures for target species.
  • The documentation on the inventorying methodology for mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish, coleopteran, lepidopteran, odonate, orthopteran, crustacean and mollusk species, with special mentions for: priority species, large carnivores, reintroduced species.
  • Maps showing the distribution of target species within SCI sites.
  • The scientific documentation for the management of SCIs.
  • Methodological guide on the anthropic impact control in Natura 2000 sites – SCIs.
  • Layman terms promotional materials needed for information spread and awareness rising.

The partners involved (MNINGA, INCDDD, ISER, ICAS, EVICONS, ASA E-S) have a long tradition in developing projects on the conservation and long-term management of biological diversity, forming a diverse, interdisciplinary team (biologists, forestry specialists, IT-sts, geographers, engineers). The team includes PhD students with subjects pertaining to the project domain, for which the present project is a further chance for achieving scientific consecration.
